Friday I'm In Love: Pinkshinyultrablast Plus

Wednesday Oct 08, 2025
Someone on Facebook confessed their love for former St. Petersburg, Russia band Pinkshinyultrablast and I felt compelled to do a live show playing all thinks Pink, Shiny and Ultrablasty. Did I know they took their name from the Astrobrite album of the same name? No. Do I know how to pronounce the band members' names? Russian is difficult to pronounce. Did I know the singer actually sang in English and there were actual lyrics online? Nope. I was able to discern a few lyrics on their later songs, especially from their last album Miserable Miracles, where the vocals are higher in the mix. But they're not glossolalia like that from Sigur Ros or Liz Fraser of Cocteau Twins. There is very little information online about the band, though there are a few album reviews and live footage. There are no bands quite like Pinkshinyultrablast and they sadly are no more after releasing a few full lengths, a few EP's and a few remixes. But their legacy lives on in their approach and their exuberance.
Along with music from each of their albums I also played music that contained the same blissful, emotional sound as Pinkshiny, especially two songs from Tapeworms, a duo that also went from being more punk to becoming almost solely electronics and vocals.
